These prayers were chanted at my wedding by a Brahmin priest and these are the translations he gave me. The first prayer was chanted at the beginning for purification and preparation of the bride and groom.
Om saha navavatu saha nau bhunaktu saha viryam karavavahai. Tejasvi navadhitam astu. ma vidvisavahai. Om shantih shantih shantih. Hari Om. “Let us be saved together, let us be reared together and united and strengthened together too. Let us not be jealous of each other.”
A fire ritual called ‘havan’ was performed to honour the deities by placing hands over the fire. The bride and groom washed themselves with blessings as the priest chanted the Gayatri Mantra.
Om bhur bhuvah swaha, tat savitur varenyam bhargo devasya dhimahi. Dhiyo yo nah pracodayat.
“Let us be in union with thine luminous nature who is the creator of the three worlds and giver of our intellect.”
The universal peace prayer to close the blessing.:
Sarveshaam mangalam bhuyaat sarvresantu niramayaah. Sarve bhadrani pashyantu ma kashchit dukha bhak bhavet. Nandantu sarva bhutaani niraatan kaani santucha. Priiti rastu paras param siddhi rastu cha karma naam. Swast yastu raajno nitya pah sham prajaa bhya stathe vaastu. Swast yastu dvipade nityam shanti rastu chatus-pade. Shaanti rastu no devasya bhur bhuvah swah shivam tatha. Sarvatah shanti rastu nah saumyaa bhavantu bhutani. Twam deva jagatah srastaa paataa daiva twame vahi. “Let there be good to all, let all be free from sickness, let all see good and let none suffer. Let all be happy and fearless, let there by sympathy for each other and success for all work. Let there be prosperity to the King who protects the people every day and also to the people. Let the bipeds and the quadrupeds be prosperous everyday. Let there be peace in Gods and in the three worlds, let us and all other beings have peace everywhere. Creator and sustainer as thou art of the world, Thou encourageth godliness and establisheth peace amongst the people. Who is my friend today, let him be in peace and who is my enemy let him also be in peace.” May peace and peace and peace be everywhere.
